All beaches and some swimming pools open for the holidays

While most public pools around Durban are open for swimming, the Inyoni Rocks and Winklespruit swimming pools remain closed.

AS THE mercury soars and visitors continue to flock in, eThekwini has announced that all its beaches are open for bathing, including Winklespruit Beach, which has remained closed for most of the year. Around 1 300 000 holidaymakers are expected to visit the metro during the festive season.

In a statement, eThekwini said the latest water quality test results indicated that all its 23 beaches can be safely enjoyed by bathers.

“eThekwini Municipality is steadily advancing restoration efforts, bringing our coastal facilities closer to the high standards enjoyed before the April 2022 floods. We remain committed to ensuring safe, welcoming, and world-class beach experiences for all residents and visitors during the festive season and beyond,” the statement read.

All public swimming pools, except Inyoni Rocks in Amanzimtoti, as well as the Winklespruit swimming pool, are open. Both pools have been closed for some time due to infrastructure damage. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the City is exploring options of turning both pools into tidal pools. Meanwhile, the Lower Illovo swimming pool is expected to reopen soon as repairs have been completed.

Bathers are reminded that swimming under the influence of alcohol is prohibited, and that instructions by law enforcement officers, lifesavers and pool supervisors need to be obeyed at all times to ensure safety for all.
