“As we are at the end of 2025, celebrating the Christmas season, it is a time to pause, reflect, and spend moments with those who matter most. Across South Africa, this year has not been easy, as many families have felt the pressure of rising living costs, uncertainty in the economy, and the everyday challenges of making ends meet.

However, and despite this, South Africans have continued to show resilience, kindness and a deep sense of community. Here in KwaZulu-Natal, we have shared in these challenges. From weather-related disruptions to ongoing infrastructure pressures, communities have had to adapt and support one another. What, however, stands out most is the way people across the province continue to step up, helping neighbours, supporting local initiatives and working together to keep our communities strong.

Within eThekwini, this has been a year of steady effort under difficult conditions. Financial and operational constraints have affected service delivery, but there has also been a renewed focus on stabilising systems, improving accountability, and restoring essential services. While progress can sometimes feel slow, important groundwork has been laid for improvement in the times ahead.

Here in Ward 97, the true spirit of community has been on full display. From volunteers cleaning beaches and parks, to neighbourhood watches and community policing forums keeping residents safe, to faith groups, sports clubs, and civic organisations bringing people together, these everyday actions make a real difference. They remind us that strong communities are built by ordinary people who care.

As we enjoy the festive season, I encourage everyone to look out for one another, support local businesses, respect our beautiful coastline, and travel safely. Small acts of kindness and participation go a long way in shaping the places we call home.

Looking ahead to 2026, there is reason for hope, especially so against the backdrop of local government elections.

By continuing to work together, staying involved, and caring for our neighbourhoods, we can build communities that are safer, cleaner and more resilient.

May this Christmas bring you peace, rest, and renewed hope for the year ahead.”
