Mzulwini’s wife, Mpume, said the family is still at a loss and is praying that he will be found. She said as days go by and the search continues, the weight of the loss is taking its toll on her and the children.
“It’s been very hard, and we didn’t have a festive season. We miss him, and we hope he will be found soon,” said Mpume.
A few days into the new year, Mpume was notified of an unknown male body that had been admitted to the Park Rynie government mortuary on December 30. A visit to the mortuary revealed that it was not Mzulwini. On January 7, Mpume said a private search and rescue company had joined the search, and she was hopeful that he would be found by the end of the week. She described her husband as a hardworking family man who was the sole breadwinner of the family. She is fearful of what the future holds, as the family could use all the help it can get.
According to an official report, six men from Lovu township were travelling along Longacres Drive in a car when they tried to cross a low-level bridge on the Little Amanzimtoti River during a violent storm, and they were washed away. ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said three of the men managed to escape while the current swept the other three away. The car and two of the bodies were later retrieved from the river after an extensive search by search and rescue teams, while the third person, Mzulwini, remains missing. The river that took Mzulwini coincidentally passes near his home in Lovu township’s Section C upstream.
Mzulwini is of medium height and at the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a black Orlando Pirates shirt. Anyone with information can call Mpume on 078 451 3733, or his daughter Luyanda on 062 895 2861.
