Animal angel needs life-saving surgery
A lifelong animal rescue, rehoming and rehabilitation hero is in dire need of life-saving heart surgery.
AFTER more than 45 years of giving everything she has as a guardian angel for the voiceless, community stalwart and proud Amanzimtoti resident, Pam Hay, 79, stands in need of help.

Following her triple bypass surgery 15 years ago, Hay’s health has taken a serious turn and she requires urgent medical intervention. Hay explained that her heart specialist has been keeping her going with medication, but said she cannot carry on with them forever and is in dire need of a valve replacement. She said she now tires extremely quickly and has to rest between everything she does.
Her life partner of 45 years, Mervin Polley, said that despite having medical aid, the uncertainty around coverage has left her facing these life-saving procedures without the financial support she deserves. They are pensioners, and need to raise R680 000 for surgery.
Love of animals
For decades, Hay has lived and breathed rescue and care of cats and dogs, making their welfare her life’s purpose. In 1993, driven by her unwavering commitment, she became a founding member of Animal Action after parting ways with the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.
“Under her guidance, countless lives have been transformed, saved and given a second chance. I have witnessed firsthand her extraordinary generosity. She has gone without necessities herself, skipping meals, forgoing personal comforts and even sacrificing her own health appointments to ensure that neglected, injured or abandoned animals receive care,” said Polley.
Even now, Hay’s home is a sanctuary inhabited by five adorable rescues.
“I’ve worked with animals my whole life. We used to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home, but now all of us in Animal Action have gotten older. I still try to help, though, as I have strong relationships with two veterinarians and offer people discounted rates on spays and neuters,” said Hay.
“This is a woman who has spent decades giving everything she has to those who cannot repay her, not with money, but with the currency of love and trust. I cannot think of anyone more worthy of our collective support than Pam Hay. I pray with all my heart that she raises the funds needed for her heart operation, not just because she has earned it through decades of service, but because the world needs more people like Pam in it,” said Polley.
