Isipingo’s dedicated pet protector shares her story

The founder of a dedicated animal rescue non-profit, Pet Rescue Isipingo, shares where her passion for animals came from.

ANIMALS perk up as soon as they lay eyes on Pet Rescue Isipingo founder, Nirvana Ramlall, and for good reason, as she has for the past eight years dedicated her time and energy to giving a voice to voiceless pets and rescuing animals in need.

“I was inspired by the loss of my husband, Gord Hausmann, who I shared a love of animals with. Since then, I’ve worked hard to create a movement to benefit animals and create friendly, loving environments for rescued cats and dogs,” said Ramlall.

Pet Rescue Isipingo is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing animals in dire situations, fostering caring environments for them and providing them with loving homes.

When the story began

When she was 14, she received a gift that would shape her lifelong passion, a dog named Gypsy.

She stumbled and went about caring for Gypsy in the best way she could without experience or education in proper pet care. That lack of pet care knowledge is something she wants to remedy by educating people, as she strongly believes that prevention is better than cure when it comes to pet health.

In her years running the NPO, Ramlall has fostered a support system of multiple veterinary teams and some of the best animal doctors in Durban, and dozens of community members who support her work financially.

The animal lover is open about her deep passion for animal rescue.

“I believe that we make a difference. I’ve been exposed to so many disturbing situations where pets have endured horrible outcomes. It can be stressful work but the joy of a rescue is reinvigorating and always inspires hope and optimism. Every animal saved makes a difference,” said Ramlall.

She explained that while facilitating rehabilitation for animals is daunting, the weeks of care bring joy when she gets to see an animal no one thought would survive instead thrive and overcome the odds stacked against them.

How can you help Pet Rescue Isipingo?

With dozens of dogs to care for, the NPO is in need of plastic dog houses for its rescued animals to feel safe, comfortable and have a small space to call their own while waiting for their forever home.

In addition, pet food is a constant need, with one 20kg bag of dog food lasting about four days due to the many mouths to adequately feed. Should you wish to assist Pet Rescue Isipingo, contact Nirvana Ramlall on 062 633 0544 or email petrescueisipingo@gmail.com.
