At around 07:00, police responded to the scene of the accident involving a private vehicle and a Toyota HiAce which was transporting schoolchildren.

Amanzimtoti police spokesperson, Captain Charlene Petersen, said that it is alleged that both vehicles were travelling in the same direction in two lanes.

“As the lanes were about to merge, the driver of the scholar transport began accelerating to overtake the private vehicle and in doing so, collided with the private vehicle on the driver side. As a result, both vehicles lost control and veered onto the opposite side of the road,” said Petersen.

The learners involved in the accident were between five and 15 years old. Two of the learners, aged 10 and 15, respectively, were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated. Petersen confirmed that the injured learners were treated on scene and transported by ambulance to various hospitals.

A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened for further investigation.
