Sanele Dlamini, 28, was arrested after the shooting, which took place in May 2025 at Zamani Transit Camp, where he and his accomplices tracked and attacked a group of people who were sitting indoors drinking.
The Durban High Court heard that community members at the nearby U-section in Umlazi had earlier assaulted Dlamini, his brother Lungelo Dlamini, and a friend named Secunda Msomi, accusing them of committing crimes in the area. Lungelo would die of his injuries later that day, leading Dlamini to seek revenge. Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said Dlamini and his accomplices found the victims in a house drinking alcohol and indiscriminately opened fire on them.
“Eight people died, and four others were rushed to the hospital with gunshot injuries. Detectives from the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit took over the investigation. Dlamini was identified as one of the suspects, and police traced and arrested him,” said Netshiunda.
Following some technicalities in court, Dlamini could only be convicted on two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
The search for the other alleged perpetrators continues.
