Kuswag’s netballers win South Coast Regional trophy for the first time

Kuswag Skool's dynamic netball girls overcame the odds and etched their names into the history books as they won the regional trophy.

A NEW name was etched into the history books and onto the South Coast Regional trophy for the SPAR KZN Schoolgirl’s Fast 5s Netball Challenge when Kuswag Skool were crowned champions at Southcity Christian School on August 16.

A monumental regional final ensued. Determined and driven, Kuswag faced off aganst KwaMakhutha Comprehensive High School.

After a solid first pass, Kuswag had whipped the ball down to an attacking position in three passes but were denied their first attempt. Only 40 seconds later, Kuswag knocked in the first point of the game. Going into half-time, Kuswag was sitting two points clear of their rivals, with the score 6 to 4 for KwaMakutha. An icy wind was gusting across the courts. Both teams opted to play conservatively, concentrating on a more solid attack, securing one-pointers rather than the more flamboyant flighted points that would have been difficult in the breeze,” explained publicist Sophie Thompson.

A heated back-and-forth saw the second half quicken the pace. Kuswag netted their seventh point, followed by a strong response by KwaMakhutha. Nearing two minutes of play, Kuswag managed another goal, giving them a two-point gap, but KwaMakhutha did not back down, with its talented fowards finding the centre of the goal, clawing them back to 7-8.

Kuswag did not let off the pressure and pocketed two more goals thanks to goal attack, Ansu Botha, and goal shooter teammate, Clarise Botha. Despite Kuswag’s 10-7 lead, a spirited patch of play by KwaMakhutha’s Olwethy Mkhize in the goal defence ignited a fire in her team, landing three points to level the score in the final two-and-a-half minutes.

For the first time this year, and the third time in the five years of the tournament, the regional final’s decider moved to a lightning quick one minute of extra time. After a short team talk, Kuswag came out firing on all cylinders, quickly taking control and going up by two more points to claim their first regional win,” said Thompson.
