* THE proposed merger between Athlone Park and Umbongintwini Primary school is off. After considerable speculation in the both sectors of the Athlone Park community, concerning the possibility of a merger, discussions initiated by the Education Department were held by the two parent advisory committees.
The merger was initiated by the Education Department in the interest of the school children of their area.

* A YOUNG toddler lost the tip of one of his fingers in a freak accident involving a shopping trolley this week. The incident occoured when his mother, Annatjie Engelbrecht of Shulton Park was waiting to have vegetables weighed in the OK.
Her younger son Wikus, aged two-and-a-half, was in the trolley and his older brother, Willie tried to climb in and join him. The Trolley suddenly tripped over landing on the elder boys legs, and severing the tip of the young Wikus’s finger.

* SECURITY has been stepped up at the Sanlam shopping centre at Winklespruit as a result of a daring daylight robbery at Pick ‘n Pay last Saturday morning.
At about 8.15am on Saturday, as shoppers began filling the store, two gunmen held up Pick ’n Pay manager Ian Kleynsmith and then escaped in a stolen car with three accomplices with R59 000 in cash.

* A REVOLVER-wielding Kingsburg lady has been commended by the police for the help she gave in arresting a suspect. On Tuesday this week, Constable Matt Kay-Clough was patrolling the Almond Road area of St Winifreds, when he saw a man carrying a large plastic bag. He searched the bag and found a video recorder and a portable radio.
The man gave an unlikely explanation about having these items in his possession and resisted arrest. Mrs EP Laidlaw, who happened to be passing in her car helped the constable arrest the man.

* THE ISSUE of the amalgamation of Amanzimtoti and Kingsburgh was raised again, this time at the Kingsburgh mayoral induction at the ATKV hall on Tuesday night. Outgoing Mayor, Ben Vosloo, asked the new council to give serious consideration to the long term financial implications of a merger and to pose the question: “at what price to the autonomy”.

* MONDAY evening saw the Kingsway High School standard 10 art exhibition being staged in the media centre. This exhibition was well supported by parents and friends and it was pleasing to have Miss Ferreira (subject advisor for art) also in attendance.
