Bronwen vanquishes Gauteng tenpin cup
12-year-old Eathen’s first tournament after only bowling for about four months and he bowled a personal best of 181 on the way.

AMANZIMTOTI Tenpin Bowling Club (ATBC) last reported how well Bronwen Elbourne had bowled to lead the ATBC scratch champs at the halfway mark.
This week the club can report that, like a modern day Joan of Arc, she travelled north to Johannesburg to compete in the Gauteng cup and ended up beating the country’s top male bowlers to emerge victorious and bring the trophy back to KZN.
On her way to the title, Bronwen bowled five knockout games, emerging victorious each time, by scoring 1903 pins overall at an average of 190 per game.
Locally ATBC hosted the 'parent and child' doubles tournament this weekend, with six teams participating over five handicap games.
Defending champions, Mike and Zain Woodroffe, were on hand to defend their title but were surprised by the level of opposition this year.
After the first game, mother-and-son combination of Janine and Dylan had surged into the early lead but could not keep up their level of performance. They were overtaken by father-and-son combination of Billy and Warren Sturgeon from the second game and they never looked back as they forged ahead to take the title for 2013. A surprise entry of 'ouma' Suki Studzinski and grandson Eathen Irmscher caused great concern after being solidly in last place after the first game, when they fought back valiantly to capture second position. This was 12-year-old Eathen’s first tournament after only bowling for about four months and he bowled a personal best of 181 on the way.
He is a member of the junior league of the ATBC. In third place were mother-and-daughter combination of Judy and Sue Bhagwandin.
League scores have not been that great in this period as all the +50 bowlers have been competing in Bedfordview in the national tournament, which finished on Saturday.
ATBC hopes they have all returned safely and looks forward to meeting up on the lanes again shortly.
On a sombre note, the club expresses the condolences of all its members to Joan van Rensburg on the death of her husband Jack, a loyal member of ATBC and KZN tenpin bowling for many years.
