League games serve up great squash
THIS has been another very interesting and enjoyable week at Toti Squash Club with the summer league consisting of six teams of 12 players each, squaring up to each other at the halfway stage of the league.

Some of the most entertaining and hard-fought games from the past week were club chairman Neil Carroll, determined not to lose two weeks in a row, had to use all his skill and good maneuverability around the court to eventually beat the incredibly hard hitting Thys van der Merwe.
Good to see Steve Crocker back at the club after quite a long absence and although he has made his comeback several layers down the rankings compared to his previous level, he also had to work hard to beat the vastly improved Neville Mcartney. If only Neville could improve his finishing and not lose so many valuable points to unforced errors, his fitness and competitive spirit would make him a more difficult opponent.
Two of the most hard working and determined players at the club, Anthony Mckay and Dirk Botha had a real humdinger, with Anthony finally winning 3-2. Japie Mathyssen did not experience too much pain in beating Kurt Reinbach, the main reason being Kurt does not play often enough to allow his real potential to manifest.
The oldest and longest serving member at the club, Pommie/Ballie Peter Laver bullied young Ian Sayer on the court in showing what unconventional style and all-round years of experience can do by winning 3-0. Not too bad for the pensioner, whose request before the game had to be turned down, and that, that despite his age, he would not be given and free pensioner’s points.
Two of the newcomers certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves and provided a really entertaining match, with Mark Smith narrowly edging out Andrew Sutherland 3-2.
