Brits conquer ‘boere meisies’ at Toti GC

As closure to the league fundraiser held recently, the club thanks all the sponsors for their generous support.

THE long-awaited Amanzimtoti Golf Club skirmish between the ‘boere meisies’ and the Brits took place on Saturday, and the Brits came out victorious, but it was not an easy win as the meisies made them fight to the bitter end to secure the win.

Final score from this encounter was the Brits won two up.

The other knockout challenge match played on Saturday also went to the 18th hole, with Gerda Heydenrych and Colleen Smit winning one up against Liz Donald and Brenda Morgan.

While those women were competing in the knockout, the other women were involved in their regulation Saturday competition, also a betterball format. Winners on the day were Delene Berry and Cheryl Flutter on 41 points, with Atri Wilson and pivot Delene Berry in second on 38 points.

Staying with the women’s section, congratulations go to Jacqui Porrill for winning the KZNLGA matchplay championships held at MECC recently. It took 36 holes of medal to qualify for the matchplay, followed by another four rounds of golf over two days to finally reach the winner’s podium. An amazing achievement by the women captain, which Toti GC is very proud of.

South Coast region has named its teams for the upcoming inter region competition. Once again Amanzimtoti is well represented in these sides, with Jacqui Porrill and Cheryl Flutter both playing for the Umdoni team, which Jacqui will also captain, and Brenda Morgan and Liz Donald both chosen to play for the Mkhula team. Thanda Zama has been selected to play in the composite team. Good luck to the women for their first match, scheduled to take place at Dundee on the first weekend in April.

On Wednesday, 27 players competed in the IPS. Top spot went to Phelp Stevenson on a superb 44, followed by Robert Roux with 39 and Martin Rumbelow on 38 points. The Friday Sundowner nine hole competition was a more genteel affair, with all three top players finishing with 20 points. Rob Stone won the count-out from Errol Woods and Nic Brits.

The men played a fourball alliance on Saturday, two scores to count all round, and this was a closely contested competition. The winning team on 95 points was Mike Igesund, Steve Conlan, Greg Veldtman and Tommy McNaughton. In second place were Servaas van Niekerk, Gert Vosser, Mr S Vosser and their pivot on 94 points. Third place went to Sadeak Khader, Mervyn Naidoo, Rakesh Naidoo and Sagren Reddy on 92 points. Nearest the pin on the 4th was won by Sadeak Khader, and the jackpot was not won so will be carried over to next Saturday.

This coming weekend sees the whole club compete in the annual club championships. Good luck to all the players – may the medal format be kind to you, the water hazards dry up, legavaan alley repel any golf balls fired in its direction, and may your putts all drop.

As closure to the league fundraiser held recently, the club thanks all the sponsors for their generous support. They are MPL Logistics, Southgate Electrical, ARB Wholesalers, Free State Transformers, Amanzimtoti Masons, Pro Pipe, Treated Timber Products and Southern Filtration.
