UGC’s 10 hole contest tests six pin golfers

Apologies to Eric Morsner and Richard Andersson who were also chosen to play but were not in last week's report.

WITH the hype Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) women caused over the last couple of weeks while playing in the KZN championships in Durban, the men were slightly overlooked when not one but three members went down to Port Elizabeth to play in the Nomads nationals.

Apologies to Eric Morsner and Richard Andersson who were also chosen to play but were not in last week’s report.

Unfortunately, there was a communication glitch as only Jimmy Spear was mentioned by the scribe, who ventured forth to PE. Since the weather was so foul and horrible at the time, it’s hats off to the champion – he certainly deserves his trophy. Well done to our three musketeers who went down to PE but unfortunately came back empty-handed.

A very successful ’10 hole’ competition was held on the public holiday, Friday, 21st March, played to six pin rules. The golfers who usually only play six pin were quite surprised at how tough playing 10 holes can be. Everyone had a great time with the braai afterwards being one big party. Hopefully this will be an annual event.

Wednesday was the individual stableford and the club welcomed Keith Niblock and Allan Arde. Taking home the first prize was Simon van den Bosch on 43 points, followed by Sierd Lamminga, five shots off the pace in second spot on 38 points. Nelson Moonsamy slipped into third place with 37 points, with Neil Thompson snatching up the last place with 36 points.

What a great success the Weiss VW sponsored day was last Saturday, as there were 60+ players on the course in the competition alone. Peter Toward welcomed all visitors, too numerous to mention individually from as far afield as Plettenberg Bay way down south to Maritzburg in the west. The winners on the day were three generations of Naickers, Tom, Viv and Tash, along with Kevin Kisten on 93 points with Simon van den Bosch, Dave Kemp and the Stander brothers, Attie and Alwyn in second slot with 89 points. Sliding into third place were Gary Marquis-Jones, Corrine Penn-Sawers and Vesa and Susi Suhonen on 87 points, counting out Andy Davidge, Dave Mulroy and John and Annette Gillett, also on 87 points.

Nearest the pins were Mike Cromhout fourth; Saga Reddy ninth; Jos Matthysen 13th and Denise Nell 17th.

A huge thank you to Jos Matthysen from Weiss VW Toti for always coming to the party.

To all members who are playing club champs next Saturday and Sunday, 29 and 30 March, all the very best of luck. There is only a week left to practise – get rid of all those bad shots so that your drives may be long and straight and your putts short and in the hole – the first time.

Also on the agenda is UGC’s women’s day on 1 May. As it is another public holiday, the women have decided to open it up and have a mixed fourball alliance with four nearest the pins and a straightest drive competition as well. Your green fees will include a ‘snack platter” and for further information and tee times, call women captain, Bryony Rogers on 073-510-1052 or the club on 039-973-1042. It promises to be a great day for everyone so book early.
