UGC women show they’re awesome in foursomes

Always a popular competition is the fourball alliance and although it wasn't the sponsored competition, was still quite well supported.

THIS week Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) has good reason for being proud of a few of the members who have recently played well in the various competitions they have entered and come out on top.

Two women, woman captain Bryony Rogers and SCR secretary Annette Thorold, after quietly going about their business and winning the Natalia foursomes at club level, played last Monday, 23 June at Scottburgh Golf Club and won that too. It was pretty nail-biting stuff, since Bryony and Annette beat Port Shepstone, taking the game to the 18th hole and only won after the last ball dropped into the hole. Foursomes is played in the matchplay format and both women advance to the next round, which is being played at Toti Golf Club. Congratulations, women and best of luck at Toti.

Not to be outdone, one of the men has been busy as well. Piet Vermaak, who is also a member of Sages (Metropolitan) played in their two-day championships last Monday and Tuesday at UGC, in beautiful conditions – no wind, sunny days, in one word – perfect. There are a number of Umkomaas members who play Sages and having home-course advantage is a major help when it is championship time but Piet really outdid himself on both days. He went on to become the Sages C division champion. This is a remarkable achievement and deserved congratulations go to Piet ‘Jorsie’ Vermaak on being the Sages C division champion 2014.

On Wednesday, quite a few visitors played in the individual stableford competition – Jan Moran, Steve Murphy, Claude Osborne, Miles Kendrick, I Smit and Moorosi Seboka of Bloemfontein Golf Club.

It was also good to see Sierd Lamminga back on his feet again and Craig Upton who hasn’t been playing golf for a while because of work commitments. Winning the competition on 40 points on a count out was Roddy McGibbon, followed very closely by Ronny Thorold in second spot. In third place was Peter Boshoff with 39 points and taking the last prize on offer was Ken Harding in fourth slot with 36 points.

Always a popular competition is the fourball alliance and although it wasn’t the sponsored competition, it was still quite well supported. Welcome, once again to Clause Osborne and Richard Thompson, club captain of Victoria Golf Club in Maritzburg and Bing Opie, a UGC member but not a regular player although the club hopes to see more of Bing from now on. The winners this month of the alliance were club captain, Peter Toward, Graham Coxell, Derek Airey and Michelle van der Merwe on 91 points and in second slot was Bruce Sutcliffe, Kuben Naidoo, Robbie Mathias and George Mzimela on 89 points. The jackpot was won on 11 points and shared between Peter Boshoff, Peter Toward and Kuben Naidoo. Vic de Klerk lifted the hidden birdie kitty which was found on the 12th hole. Andy Davidge took home the attendance draw just by being at the club for prize-giving.

Next Saturday, 5 July will be a little different as it’s a fourball ‘waltzing alliance’ instead of the normal monthly medal. Everyone got the news letter/email from Annette Gillett explaining the ‘waltzing alliance’, which should be great fun. Contact the office or the golf shop to book your tee time or for further explanation on the competition, and let’s have some fun. Sunday will be social golf, so call the office to make sure of your time.

Check Annette Gillett’s news letters for any changes to competitions, important dates and so on – this email is very useful in planning your month.
