Super seniors win for golfer at 36 hole open tournament

The jackpot was snatched up by Gregg Andersson but the hidden birdie was missed (seventh hole) as was the attendance draw (Tom Naicker) which will be carried over to next weekend.

A WHILE ago, on Sunday, 7 and Monday, 8 September, the KZNGU held its KZN senior 36 hole open tournament at Cotwold Downs Golf Club.

To most people, this would be just another tournament, played by senior members of a golf club and that would be the end of it. In this particular competition, Umkomaas has a few golfers playing but one player, Peter Boshoff really did Umkomaas Golf Club proud.

They have a ‘super seniors’ section and no trouble to Peter, he won this part of the competition, hands down, with 61 points over the two days. Many congratulations, Peter, on your glorious win at Cotswold Downs – the club flag has really been working very hard over the recent months. Well done.

Our women played down at Southbroom Golf Club last Sunday to defend the South Coast Region Lewis Reynolds Trophy, Umkomaas won last year but unfortunately it wasn’t to be this year. The Umkomaas girls all played well but it was the Southbroom women with home-course advantage who were the overall winners and will keep the trophy for a year.

Wednesday was the normal mid-week individual stableford and the club welcomed all our visitors, Alan Green from Pretoria as well as Raymond Mtombela, a former member of Umkomaas Golf Club and now a police commissioner together with his buddies from the SAPS. We all felt pretty safe that day. The winner on the day, who has had quite a good run recently (must be his adjusted driver) was Cedric Kruger on 42 points with Raymond Mtombela in second spot on 40 points. Chris Viljoen finished in third place with 39 points, counting out Johan Hugo into fourth slot, also with 39 points. Val Hazell took home the last prize on offer with 38 points.

Saturdays competition(s) were different since the men all played better ball and the women played their delayed medal round. Our visitor, Claude Osborne was welcomed to the club and competition which was played in beautiful spring weather conditions. The better ball competition was won by Gregg Andersson and Dave Mulroy on 45 points counting out Brian Daventry-Bull and Wally Kent into second place, also on 45 points. The women medal competition was won well by Sue Boshoff on a great 69 with Michelle van der Merwe in second place with a 72. The least putts was easily won by Michelle van der Westhuizen with an astonishing 25 putts.

The jackpot was snatched up by Gregg Andersson but the hidden birdie was missed (seventh hole) as was the attendance draw (Tom Naicker) which will be carried over to next weekend.

Next Saturday is the Zimbo Trophy, the much anticipated competition played in a different format from the norm – a modified stableford. There are still early times available and although the golf course is closed at present for spring treatment, the office is open in the mornings. For tee times, contact 039-973-1042. Next Sunday is social golf with the special running after 11.30am.

The Tombstone tournament is on Wednesday, 24 September (National Braai Day and Heritage Day) which is a sort of scary medal competition. Do come on down for a fun morning playing with friends.

Up-date – Natalia foursomes finals: This competition was played on Monday, 1 September at Amanzimtoti Golf Club and was won by Annette Thorold and Bryony Rogers from Umkomaas Golf Club. They played against Scottburgh Golf Club in what was to have been a 36 hole competition but only 27 holes were played. Unfortunately, due to circumstances of not being informed that the greens staff would be starting their spring treatment that day, play came to a rather sudden halt. The Umkomaas team of Annette and Bryony were 4-up on the Scottburgh ladies, Mogie Moodley and Hilary Holmes after the 27th hole was played where Umkomaas were the eventual winners. The SCR president, Jane Lind was there to make sure all was above board and no rules were broken. Apologies to all concerned for the mis-understanding of three weeks ago.
