Toti women golfers claim second spot in Southbroom

There are still a few tee off times available for the club annual “South Coast Classic” fundraising golf day, scheduled for Sunday, 28 September, cost per player R175.

LAST Sunday, 12 of Amanzimtoti Golf Club’s (AGC) women travelled to Southbroom to compete in the Lewis Reynolds trophy.

Conditions were simply magnificent, no wind and lovely sunshine, but the greens, having recently been hollow tined, dictated a lot of the play. Having said that, at least the playing fields were levelled for all the contestants, and only home course advantage made any real difference.

To this end the Southbroom B team swept aside the opposition to win by a massive 90 points. Our A team comprising Jacqui Porrill, Delene Berry, Liz Donald and Brenda Morgan did very well to take second spot on the day with a solid 83 points. It was lovely to see such a good turn-out of Toti women supporting the Southern region event.

The KZNLGA inter-club championships are just over a month away, and will attract a field of 300 women from around the province. Preparations are well underway and the women’s committee are putting their expert touches to the arrangements for all our guests. This tournament is the highlight on the annual golfing calendar in KZN, and our club’s goal is to make it the best one ever.

Wednesday, 24 September is a public holiday, and the normal IPS competition will be played, so all those who don’t usually get to play on a Wednesday can now come on down and join in the fun. It would be lovely to see a full field on the day, so don’t squander the opportunity for a little mid-week game of golf.

Results from the week; last Wednesday 30 players competed for the meat in the IPS competition, with Bobby Milne once again leading the charge with 41 points, followed by Max van Wyngaard on 39, who in turn beat Ian Smit into third place by way of a count out. On Friday, 24 players took part in the 9 hole Sundowner, with G Burmeester winning on the day with 23 points. Ian Smit won the count out for second place this time round on 21 points, duly counting out Ruan Roode.

On Saturday, the men played a 4BBB bonus bogey format, and 68 players vied for the honours. Winners on the day were the pairing of Max van Wyngaard and Dave Richardson on +10, who counted out Hu Turnbull and playing partner Terry Cousins, and the third placed team of Servaas van Niekerk and Ben Viljoen. Fourth place went to Mike Halse and Nic Brits on +8. Nearest the pin on the 15th hole was won by Mike Igesund, Max van Wyngaard won the jackpot, and the attendance draw was unclaimed so carries over to next weekend.

The women played a threeball alliance on Saturday, with two scores to count all round. The spoils went to the team of Brenda Morgan, Jacky Dunlop and Gill Symons with 78, while Sue Boucher, Delene Berry and Lass Davis finished second on 75 points. Lass also picked up nearest the pin on the seventh.
