Best nett, gross for UGC women golfers at inter club champs

Rounding off the women's report with Sabiha's jaunt up to Sun City last week for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge.

THE excitement of going to inter club for the women is now over and by all accounts, they all had an absolutely wonderful time, despite the intermittent rain on occasion.

Two of Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) girls, Michelle van der Merwe and Sabiha Bacaus did very well in the silver division on Saturday, winning both the best nett and gross on that day. Congratulations to them both – the Umkomaas girls have done so well lately and can now look forward to next year’s inter club up north in Empangeni. Congratulations to all the girls who played at Toti, especially first-timer Moira Visser – you girls rock. Congratulations to Amanzimtoti Golf Club on all their efforts to make this year’s women’s inter club such a success.

Rounding off the women’s report with Sabiha’s jaunt up to Sun City last week for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. While Sabiha didn’t win any trophies up there, the experience was awesome.

The men’s inter club takes place at a number of clubs down the South Coast in a couple of weeks’ time. The club wishes them all the best of luck over those three days. Let’s hope that the torrential rain the South Coast has experienced these last few weeks doesn’t make an appearance again and spoil the men’s tournament. Good luck guys and play well.

There seems to be a new challenger in the Wednesday competition in the form of John Thompson. John is a relatively new retiree to the coast, playing on Wednesdays and the odd Saturday with not too much success. Last Wednesday John played in the individual stableford competition and won it for the first time with 38 points. In 2nd spot was Simon van den Bosch on 37, followed by Dave Kemp in 3rd slot, counting out Barrie Taylor in to 4th place, both on 37.

On Saturday, the Widenham Trophy was played for as an individual stableford competition, hosting many of the club’s former members from Toti Golf Club, bearing in mind that as the hosts of the women’s inter club, Toti’s course was closed for the duration. It was so nice to see former members Brian Stewart, Chris van Oudtshoorn, Hugh Turnbull and Willie and Sue Boucher playing on their old course at Umkomaas as well as Rob Symons, Terry Cousins, Buff Berry, Norbert du Pont, Errol Woods, Nick Britz, Mike Tait, Warren Wagner, Pat Fowler and Chris Coetzee, who were all welcomed to the club and the competition at prize giving by club captain, Peter Toward. Although the rain had threatened the whole day, it held off until after the golf.

The winner of the Widenham Trophy on 44 outstanding points was, once again, John Thompson with Dave Kemp, hot on his heels in 2nd spot and counting out Graham Coxell into 3rd place, both of them with 40 points. Chris Coetzee slipped into 4th place with 39, followed by Mike Cromhout in 5th spot, counting out both Jimmy Spear and Mike Tait, all three on 37.

Knowing the course quite well was a bonus for Chris van Oudtshoorn, who took home the jackpot with 11 points. Mike Cromhout snatched the attendance draw. Well done to all the players and congrats to the winners.
