Girl power reigns at UGC

Last Monday, Bryony Rogers played in the senior women's monthly game down at Umdoni.

ONCE again, Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) women have done the club proud – the silver girls played their KZN champs at Beachwood on Sunday and although Natalie Singer and Michelle van der Merwe didn’t qualify for the next round, it’s a mighty well done to Sabiha Bacaus for getting through.

So now UGC has Bryony Rogers and Annette Gillett into the next bronze matchplay round as well as Sabiha into the next silver matchplay round. They play at Beachwood Golf Club on Monday, 23 March, teeing off very early as it’s a knock-out from here on in. The results of this encounter for the trio will definitely be in next week’s edition if they all go further than Monday’s play. Last Monday, Bryony Rogers played in the senior women’s monthly game down at Umdoni. She played very well and actually won this event. Well done, Bryony – may you play just as well at the KZN champs.

Wednesday’s individual stableford got off to a slow start but since the threat of rain was waived, all the players set off with trepidation expecting to get soaked to the skin anyway. Fortunately this didn’t happen and it was Andy Davidge who took home the first prize, counting out Jimmy Pickavance into second place, both on 36 points.

The Alliance League this week, always well supported, welcomed visitors Erwin Vermaak and Claude Osborne as well as new member Jacques Kirstein. So nice to see Natalie Singer playing in the club competition on Saturday, having flown down from Gauteng to play in the KZN champs last Sunday. Hopefully we will see more of her and the Singer family in the not too distant future. Many thanks go to Shaun van Zyl from Douglas Green for sponsoring the nearest the pin hampers and the rock shandies on the 5th hole. It was much appreciated by all the players. This competition, always a competitive and sporting ‘grudge’ game, was won, very narrowly by ‘The Naidoos’, Bruce Sutcliffe, Dylan Sutcliffe, Christopher Pillay and Kuben Naidoo with 90 points followed very closely by UGC’s industrial league players, ‘The Dream Team’ Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley, Derek Airey, with thanks to their ghost player, took second prize on 89 points. The jackpot was won, very convincingly, by Jimmy Pickavance on 12 points but the hidden birdie will remain hidden for another week which was on the very long 10th hole. The ‘nearest the pin’ hampers were won by Bruce Sutcliffe on the 9th hole and Nelson Moonsamy on the 17th hole. These two also got their 2-Clubs on the 9th and 17th holes respectively. Dylan Sutcliffe took home the attendance draw and Peter Williamson, once again, scooped the birds in the football sweep with Swindon Town FC.

Next Saturday’s competition is the three ball waltzing alliance – call the club for more on this format. It’s great fun so choose your partners well. There will be social golf on Sunday with a group playing fairly early in the morning.

Back to Friday, 27 March, it’s bingo evening again and all are welcome at the club and join in the fun, starting at about 6pm. The cards are R10 each and the meals will cost you R25 per person. Annette Gillett is your contact on 082-927-5013 or the club on 039-973-1042.

Don’t forget, there’s a ‘three Jacks and a Jill’ alliance competition on Easter Sunday, 5 April. Call the club to book your time. There are great prizes to be won as well as side competitions, and a bring and braai afterwards. Let’s have some fun.

UGC’s thoughts and prayers are with Neil Thompson as he battles through his chemo sessions. We hope you feel a bit better soon, Neil.
