Robyn, Pete in nail-biter Oppenheimer loss

At TGIF the 100 board was won by Frankie Quinn, but there was no winner in the members’ draw, so the prize will remain R150 for next week.

OF the six Amanzimtoti Bowling Club teams to get through to rounds four and five of the Port Natal Oppenheimer mixed pairs competition, Robyn Hutton and Peter Callaghan won in the fourth round and then played Jill Buzzard and J Harris in the fifth round.

Robyn and Pete were down 11-0 but pulled up strongly to peel on 23 shots each on the 21st end.

All the spectators on the veranda held their breath as the extra end was played, but sadly they lost by a very narrow margin. The only ABC team still standing for the sixth round now is the team of Heather Brown and Mike Pitchers, so the club will wish them good luck next Sunday when rounds six and seven are played.

In another tense game for the handicap singles, Jane Coetzee held off Doreen Salmond for a marathon 30 ends, before finally going down in a very tight game. In another hard-fought handicap singles game, novice Talla Stephens-Viviers was 13-3 up when her opponent Jenny Delport came back strongly. They levelled the score three times before Talla managed to win by three shots to advance to the semi-finals.

In mixed pairs, Don Saunders and Jeanne Alexander beat Peter and Maxien Barnes. In women’s mid-week league Doreen Salmond Marion Crouch, Jane Coetzee and Adrienne Robbins ended in second place in their section, so will now play for the plate. Mardi Dovale’s team of Nita Meumann, Amanda Ninow, and Val de Kok ended fourth in division four.

Inter-club league results: Men’s league: Toti A lost 0-7 to Westville A; Toti B lost 0-7 to Hillary B; Toti C beat Mt Edgecombe 5-2; Toti D lost 0-5 to Gillitts A; Toti E lost 0-5 to Woodlands A; Toti F lost 0-5 to Umhlali B; Toti G lost 0-5 to Chatsworth B. Women’s league: Toti A – 3 points; Toti B – 0 points; Toti C 2 points; Toti D 3 points.

Meryl Hambley, Maureen van der Poel and Jean Snyman were the winners of this month’s women’s trips, with Maureen Crawford, Cathy Du Plooy and Bernie Bretherton in second place. Second session went to the Winkle team of Isobel Milne, Jeanette Els and Sue Welch. Three spot prizes sponsored by Picardy Bazooka Moth Shellhole went to Maggie Robertson, Maureen Warrior and Norma Raath. Linda McGregor won the spider, which raised R173.66 for Hospice.

Congratulations to Ian Mills and Alec Stirzaker who scored an eight in men’s 2-4-2. The overall winners were Doug Walton and Keith Berry, with Les John and Ken Baker second on a count-out. Second session went to Bill Rawlinson and Barry Bush.

Visitor, Janet Gillespie was the lucky winner of a R650 prize on quiz night for answering the solo question so well done to her. The quiz is devised by Greg McLeod, with the able assistance of Gwynn, and is always offers novel and challenging fun every third Wednesday at 6.30am for 7am, so all members are invited to make up a team and join in.

Cliffie Hole, ABC’s partially sighted member, accompanied by Ken Crowe and Jean Snyman who will act as directors, have headed off again to the National Association for Blind Bowlers competition in Pretoria this week. The club wishes Cliffie the best of bowls again this year.

Great news in this time of load-shedding is that ABC has invested in a generator to power lights, the till and TV, but it won’t cover the fridges, so members will have to drink fast before the beers get warm.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by Frankie Quinn, but there was no winner in the members’ draw, so the prize will remain R150 for next week. Al McGregor’s name came out again for the second week in a row in the key draw, but he still didn’t manage to find the right key, so the pot rises to about R3,100 next week. Members are reminded that there are no mutton competitions on Sunday, 26 April, but Worker’s Day, Friday, 1 May is ‘spade day’ at ABC. It will be drawn mixed trips, and R20 will cover play and tea and sandwiches. There will be a bring and braai after the game, and loads of prizes, so put your name down.

Birthday wishes this week go to Callie Boyd, Michelle Pitchers, Julie Sutherland, Anna Myburg, Gaynor Snyman and Ron Greenslade. Finally, it is hoped that Bobby Stewart and all other members who are not well this week have a speedy recovery to health.
