Another two ATBC bowlers get SA call-up

News from the leagues this week shows an abnormally large number of high scores being achieved.

LAST weekend saw the playing of the first round of the ever popular inter-league tournament where each league playing at Dolphin Bowls enters a team or teams to compete against each other.

There is always a lot of banter and sledging between the various competitors as they try to put their opponents off their game. The winning team receives recognition at the annual banquet and has the bragging rights for the following year.

The winning team in this round was from the phantom league, the only problem that being phantoms, nobody knew they were there. Everyone will have to try and watch them in future.

This coming weekend sees the Dolphin Classic tournament on Saturday and Sunday, which has attracted a large number of top class bowlers. Winners of the event have their names entered on the honours board in the centre so extremely close competition is anticipated.

News from the leagues this week shows an abnormally large number of high scores being achieved. Some bowlers are presently on a hot streak and bowling personal bests week after week. Monday’s Taxi Trios league starts the week with 2-Hookers-and-a-Str8-Guy still in first place from joint second Pulse and High 5’s. Bowlers performing well in this league include Brian Daventry-Bull with games of 266, 259 and 225, Andrew Cyster 227 and 226; Gansen Naidoo made a rare guest appearance and bowled 265. Best of all however was Pierre du Plooy with a fine game of 279. The women were not far behind with Lorraine Brazier showing up her team mates with a 245 game, Tamika Matthew, Dolphin’s 19-year-old secret weapon, 244, third was not 19-year-old Cheryl Hambrook with a 223 game and Sue Bhagwandin 221.

Soho league is recruiting new members for its Wednesday morning slot, and is looking for people who want a bit of exercise and a lot of socialising. Vish Studzinski is currently lying in first place from Chalkie White and Katie Alberts.

Wednesday Millenium league sees High Rollers in first place followed by Sewcharans and Newbies. In the high scores, Theo Govender who has been battling a bit just lately came to light in a big way, bowling games of 268, 233 and 226 for a three game total series of 727. Brian Daventry-Bull showed the Monday score was not just a flash in the pan with another 246 game while Jivi Sewcharan weighed in with a 236.

Thursday Dolphin Doubles is in first place and slaughtering all their opponents is the Avengers team followed by Double Trouble and Hooligans. Here Pierre joined forces with Stacey-Lee Hooper and they are both going through a ‘purple patch’ as far as their bowling is concerned, Pierre bowled a 255 while ‘new look’ Stacey contributed two games of 226. Ron McClatchie (247) and Morne de Wet (230) also performed well for the men while Bronwen Elbourne had a 222 and Lorraine a 213 and 205.

In the junior league, there seemed to be no end to the Holmes family as the baby of the family, Erin, has started bowling and is leading the league for the month of May on a +41, JK Rykov in second (+34) and Leo Corbianchi third (+28)

Staff league has regular John Short on 1191 pins just ahead of Chris Boshoff (1,187) and Sammy Nel (1,137) in third.

Phantom League sees Janis Holmes (yawn yawn) in first place on 1300 pins followed by Craig Hooper (1265) and Gus McKay (1,223).

In the last ATBC report, the club advised of Bronwen Elbourne having been selected for national colours. TBASA has recently decided to increase the South African team heading to Japan to four bowlers and ATBC is pleased to announce that another two of its members have been given this honour. Stacey-Lee Hooper and Jivi Sewcharan will accompany Bronwen and Fran to the World Bowling Tour Major in Tokyo from 10 to 12 July. Congratulations to them all.
