Junior athletes achieve best-ever results at trials

Most of these athletes should now be selected for the KZN team to compete at the large Grey College inter-schools athletics meeting in Bloemfontein on 17 October.

JUNIOR athletes from Amanzimtoti Athletics Club excelled to secure a total of 10 first places in their age categories during the annual schools athletics trials held this weekend in cold, drizzling weather at Treverton School in Mooi River.

Amid strong competition from a large number of strong athletics schools in the province, the club’s juniors turned in their best-ever results.

Despite the heavy track some good times were also achieved. Those who won age group races included Anele Blake (girls U16 200m) and Hlengiwe Zuma (girls open 800m). Double victories were achieved by Dwayne Trollip (second in open category and first boys U17 400m and 200m), Sesi Mbatha (girls U15 400m and 200m – her 400m winning time was third fastest of all girls on the day), Rishen Archary (boys U15 400m and 200m, the 200m in a personal best 23.53sec) and Lee-anne Blake (girls U14 400m and 800m). Lee-anne’s 400m winning time of 60.56 was also the fastest by any girl in any age group on the day.

Most of these athletes should now be selected for the KZN team to compete at the large Grey College inter-schools athletics meeting in Bloemfontein on 17 October.
