LAST Saturday evening, Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) held its annual general meeting.
Thanks to all members who attended.
Thanks were extended to Jimmy Spear, outgoing club captain, for all he did during his term of office as well as the committee members, over the past year. Congratulations to new club captain, Barrie Taylor and the re-election of the present committee members. May the new club captain and his team go from strength to strength for the rest of 2016, going forward into 2017.
Wednesday welcomed Alan Sherman and his son, Michael from Scottburgh GC to the usual individual stableford competition. It was won on a count out by the effervescent Piet ‘Jorsie’ Vermaak, putting Sierd Lamminga into second spot, both on 40 points. Visitor, Michael Sherman took third place, also on a count out from fourth placed Rob Mathias, both on 39 points. Talk about a close competition.
Saturday’s fourball betterball competition welcomed Dumisani Madi and also welcomed back into the Umkomaas fold, Sean Prendergast who took a sabbatical down South for a while. The combination of Bruce Sutcliffe and Kuben Naidoo were too good for the rest of the field, taking first place with aplomb on 45 points, with a slew of players right behind them on 44 points. In order of placing, they were Barrie Taylor and Ken Koster – second; Chris Viljoen and Dave Mulroy – third; Eric Morsner and Wally Kent – fourth; John Gillett and Rob Finlay – fifth and last but not least, Christopher Pillay and Saga Reddy in sixth place. This must certainly be a record, all these teams on the same score.
The jackpot wasn’t won, neither was the hidden birdie (10th hole) so these will be carried over to next weekend. There were only two two-clubs – both on the 17th hole, from Deneys Williamson and Wally Kent. Well done. Barrie Taylor took home the attendance draw while Kevin van Rensburg won the birds in the football sweep with Oxford United. It would seem that after Spring treatment, everyone is enjoying the course, considering both Wednesday and Saturday’s results.
Next Saturday, 29 October is the Widenham Trophy individual stableford competition with social golf on Sunday, 30 October. Call the office for more information and tee times for your weekend golf on 039-973-1042.
Once again, good luck to all UGC’s inter club players – both the girls just down the road at Selborne and the guys down south at Port Shepstone, Margate and Southbroom. Play well and may all your drives be long and straight and your putts in the hole.
Next Sunday, 30 October is the craft market and car boot sale in the club’s car park from early in the morning until around mid-afternoon. Come on down to the club and have a browse around the variety of stalls. There will be woodwork, preserves, vetkoek, knick knacks and all sorts to peak your interest.
Jumping slightly ahead to November, there are a number of fun evenings being planned and organised for members’ enjoyment and entertainment, so watch this space in the weeks ahead for more information. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
The ‘Geriatrics’ play their golf on a Tuesday and Friday, starting earlier now that it’s warmer in the mornings at around 6.30am when special green fee rates apply. Call Keith on 083-305-5740 or Graham on 083-325-5705.
Six-pin is alive and well on Friday afternoons, starting at around 2.45pm. Book in at the bar as the score cards are different from the normal comp cards.
KidzGolf is also going well – this happens at UGC only during school terms on the practise putting green. Devlyn and his team welcome all new children to KidzGolf. The club will lend golf clubs to any child wishing to participate and learn this awesome game of skill.
Still no news on the new website, so call the office for any details on 039-973-1042.
