Howling wind costs long-hitter UGC golfers
This past Wednesday, 19 April, Umkomaas Golf Club winner was Mike Harvard on a winning score of 39 points

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) re-caps on the previous week.
The competition played on Wednesday, 12 April was the individual stableford – the winner was club captain, Barrie Taylor with 40 points, followed by Derek Airey in second spot on a count out from big Garth Wilyman, who was third, both with 36 points.
On Saturday, 15 April, the Easter weekend, it was the alliance league. With all the teams playing (no Naickers though), the competition between the teams was brilliant.
After the fierce wind on Good Friday, it was only slightly better on Saturday, so the teams had their work cut out for them.
Unfortunately, the big, long hitters were the ones to suffer in the wind, having a fight on their hands on just about every hole. The winning team were the Bar Flies – Eric Morsner, Jimmy Spear, Michelle van der Merwe and Dave Mulroy on a great score of 91 points, followed by second placed Blue Brothers – Devlyn Fraser, Saga Reddy and Nelson Moonsamy together with their ‘friendly ghost’ fourth player – on 87 points. The jackpot was shared, the hidden birdie was carried over to last weekend and there only two two-clubs due to that horrendous wind.
On Easter Monday, (aka Family Day) UGC hosted a really fun morning, held over 10 holes and each hole had a different ‘fun element’ to it, with lots of hilarity and laughter from all who played. Peter Toward won this particular competition with 23 points with loads of count-outs of 21 points for second place. Barrie Taylor won the count-out for second spot but handed it over, very graciously, to one of the visitors Tjokkie (no surname). Thanks Barrie. Well done to the organisers – the only day a golfer can ‘let loose and be silly’ without attracting too many weird looks. The braai afterwards was enjoyed by all.
Back to the present. Last Wednesday, 19 April, UGC winner was Mike Harvard on a winning 39 points, with Chris Viljoen in second spot, counting out Jimmy Spear into third place, both on 37 points.
Alwyn Stander took the fourth prize with 36 points. It was nice to see Wally Kent back from his holiday in Australia.
On Saturday, 22 April, the competition was the 4BBB. The weather last Saturday was superb, which the final scores will reflect. Well done to Jeff Govender and Nelson Moonsamy in first place with their score of 47 points, followed by Sabiha Bacaus and Dominic Jarvis in second slot with 46 points. In third place was Bruce Sutcliffe and John Thompson (beating the youngsters) on a count out from Eric Morsner and Sean Prendergast in fourth place. Bryony Rogers and Dave Mulroy took fifth place, all on 44 points. Both the jackpot and the hidden birdie will be carried over to next weekend but there were two two-clubs from Nelson on the ninth and Sabiha on the 17th holes. Susi Suhonen took home the attendance draw.
On Sunday, 23 April, Nelson had his Sunday ‘bash’ where the winners were Saga Reddy (first), H Zama (second) and Phillip Shinga (third). Note that anyone with a handicap may play with this group of guys – they meet under the lapa at around 11am and the next game will be on Sunday, 7 May. Give Nelson a call on 082-428-9000 if you want to join the group.
This Friday night, 28 April there’s going to be ‘frog racing’ (once again, no real frogs will be used or harmed in any way). It promises to be a really fun evening, lots of laughter and encouragement from the ‘frog backers’ – this evening will get started at around 7pm. There will be boerie and chicken rolls on sale for those who feel a bit peckish, so call John Thompson on 082-322-4920 the day before for catering and to book your table.
Saturday, 29 April is the big day – Sonny’s fundraising day. This is such an important day on the club’s calendar as it’s the only day in the year that is purely for fundraising to assist with maintenance on the course and around the clubhouse. Tee times are still available, so call Sonny at the club on 039-973-1042 to book a time. This is the last appeal to members and friends to join in on Saturday for a fun day at UGC.
Sunday, 30 April will be taken up mainly with the Allerton League players (36 holes) so there will be limited tee times available to visitors.
The ‘Gerries’ play, as always, on Tuesdays and Fridays only, meeting on the first tee at 7.15am to tee off at 7.30am. All are welcome to play and your contacts are Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.
Now that the schools have gone back for their second term, KidzGolf is back on Saturday mornings between 8am and 9am. Devlyn and Mike will be at the club to welcome all the children.
