Trio of golf compos for UGC women on Sunday

The winners of the league this month were the 'Bar Flies' - Michelle van der Merwe, Eric Morsner, Jimmy Spear and Wally Kent

By P Utter

BETWEEN last weekend and the present, winter has turned a bit nasty, leaving all who live in KZN shivering in their collective boots.

Enjoying the Indian summer days of a week ago, the golfers at Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) are now hauling out the winter woolies again. Hopefully now, Spring is on the way – looking forward to the hot and humid days ahead.

This Sunday, 23 July, some of the women travel down to San Lameer Golf Club to play in the South Coast region championships, as well as the Coronation Cup and medal of medals competitions. Michelle van der Merwe, Natalie Singer and Sabiha Bacaus (with the possibility of Lesa Vergottini joining them) will be representing UGC in these events. The club wishes the very best of luck to all its participating women – beware of the water and take lots of golf balls with you.

Although the guys played on Wednesday, the prize money was shared out among the players at the end of the day.

Saturday’s competition was the alliance league, with a full compliment of teams playing, for both members and visitors – Carl Freyer, Stephan Wiid, Nigel Henson and Allan Eriksen were welcomed at prize-giving by chairman Devlyn Fraser standing in for the club captain, Barrie Taylor.

Winners of the league were the ‘Bar Flies’ – Michelle van der Merwe, Eric Morsner, Jimmy Spear and Wally Kent with 95 points followed by a mixed and different team which formed ‘Flower Power’ – consisting of Keith Vergottini, Peter Toward, Allan Eriksen and Nigel Henson with 93 points. In third spot were the ‘Naidoos’ – Kuben Naidoo, Bruce Sutcliffe, Sean Prendergast and Christopher Pillay with their 91 points. Eric Morsner took the jackpot on 11 points, with Keith Vergottini taking the hidden birdie on the short 13th hole. The only two-club of the day went to Derek Airey on the fourth hole. The attendance draw is carried over to this weekend.

This Saturday, 22 July, the competition will be a 4BBB stableford and on Sunday, 23 July, Umkomaas hosts the composite league teams. Good luck to all the guys playing early in the morning. The Sunday bash will also take place, meeting under the lapa at 9.30am to register. Tee off time is at 10am. Anyone wishing to play with this group, should call the club on 039-973-1042 for details. Besides the activities mentioned, there will still be social golf during the morning, so call to book a tee time.

A heads-up for Sunday, 30 July – it’s Maths Mania. Basically it’s a betterball stableford competition with every hole having a different calculation with clues on the following tee box for the previous hole. This sounds like great fun for all the players, so book a tee time by calling 039-973-1042. The simple rules and details will be handed out on the day so even if your maths is a bit ‘iffy’, don’t worry it will all work out in the end. The club could use the support – this isn’t calculus or algebra, just simple maths so go along and join in for a fun day with friends.
