eThekwini gold for Amanzimtoti star

Mica claimed gold in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, silver in the 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke, and bronze in the 50m butterfly.

In a true test of mental strength, endurance and fitness, Amanzimtoti swimmer Mica Botha glided her way to a clutch of medals at the eThekwini Junior Championships, hosted at Kings Park swimming pool on 12 and 13 October, for swimmers 13-years and under.

The air was electric from the energy bursting off the swimmers on Saturday morning, with all of them keen for the start of the champs – the first major event held at the 50m pool after it re-opened in September.

“This year’s championships was like swimming a marathon for me. I swam in two-timed finals for the 200m individual medley and 200m freestyle, with eight heats and finals, and two relays – all in two days. It was a case of assembly, swim, relays, finals assembly, swim, then report at assembly again to swim the next finals! We only had a 20-minute break between heats and finals on Saturday and a 30 minute break on Sunday. This meant swimmers had to swim back-to-back races during the finals.”

Despite this, she claimed gold in the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, silver in the 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke, and capped off a good weekend in the pool with a bronze in the 50m butterfly. She scored a total of 123 points for her team, the North Coast Dolphins, and this is the fifth consecutive year the 12-year-old was crowned KZN Aquatics’ top female point scorer in her age group.
