Toti rugby star scores Sharks bursary

Wandile, who hails from Lovu North, takes on the position of flank and eight man on the field and hopes to play professionally one day.

Amanzimtoti’s rising rugby star 17-year-old, Wandile ‘Mighty Bhejane’ Ndwalane has proved to be a powerful force to be reckoned with on the field.

The Grade 12 learner is a member of the Toti Rugby Club U18 squad and was recently offered a youth club bursary from the Sharks Academy which is presented to talented youngsters. This year, Wandile was also selected for the Lions inter-provincial tournament (IPT) invitational U18 team, as a member of a 23-man squad chosen from all the U18 players at the IPT.

Impressively he is also the top tri scorer in sevens rugby.

His fascination with rugby began when he was in Grade 8, after watching a group of matric learners playing the sport.  Awe-struck, the youngster immediately asked his coach, Mr Lo Rossuow to help nurture his talents.

“I am highly passionate about rugby.  I am proud of how far I have come.  When I was younger I struggled to pass the ball but overtime and with hard work, I was able to grow as a sportsman.  I have also found a way to balance my academics with rugby,” said the humble young man.

“The support of my family and friends are everything.  At first, they thought it was different because everyone in my family are soccer fans but they understood that I loved the sport.  My greatest achievement is seeing my mum smile and knowing that the financial burden of further education has been lifted off her shoulders.”

When he is not on the rugby field, the youngster can be seen gyming and jogging as well as spending time with his family.

“Being on the rugby field is the best feeling.  I get to do what I love and am passionate about for 80 minutes at a time,” added the talented young sportsman.
