The continued practise of illegally dumping still remains a growing concern for residents. This follows the scores of items that were illegally dumped near the Amanzimtoti SPCA, recently.
Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge said, “The continued practise of waste disposal along the bank of the Umbogintwini river by individuals and business entities who are reluctant to make the trip to the landfill site or expense towards proper removal, remains a constant concern. Unfortunately our personal efforts towards establishing a viable and sustainable model that included multi-department and private stakeholders with specific focus on Nyati road, were compromised when the ward 93 councillor complained about our interference in the ward, yet without proposing or championing an alternative.”
Despite these objections, Beetge added that he will not relent but will continue to interfere as the problem extends way across politically demarcated ward boundaries.
Meanwhile, a recent study conducted by the SA Health Foundation confirmed the circumstances surrounding outfall and pollution into the river and subsequent beach and ocean to be of the worst in South Africa. A detailed report will be published.
“Protecting our environment after all remains our collective responsibility,” added Beetge.
