Meet Toti United’s rising star
Some of his achievements also include most improved player in 2015 and player of the season in 2016.
Khethelo Tembe has been playing soccer since the age of six and through perseverance, dedication and hard work, he managed to bag the sportsman of the year award for three consecutive years since 2017.
“I used to watch and play soccer with my dad at a very young age. My dad bought me a plastic soccer ball for my third birthday and he used to kick it with me. At Woodlands Primary School the principal picked me to play mini soccer in Grade 1 and l did very well in the first game. Since then I never looked back,” said the talented lad.
Khethelo is the captain of Toti United Football Club’s U17 team and plays either in the midfield, right wing or as striker.
Being captain of the team is no small task and when asked what his duties include, he said, “I relay the coach’s instructions to my teammates, prepare and assist in the field for home and away games, organise team equipment during club practise and resolve minor conflicts among players. Our team has always finished in the top three in the league. We have been doing very well because some of our players were selected to play for the Durban Central Football Association and went to play in Swaziland and Johannesburg. Thanks to our dedicated coach Zenzo Mcube.”
Some of his achievements also include most improved player in 2015 and player of the season in 2016.
“Lockdown has negatively affected me in many ways. Firstly, my fitness level has dropped due to the restrictions on movement. I miss socialising with my teammates. Mostly, I miss the competition as I am a very competitive person. I find myself being stagnant in gaining soccer knowledge from my coach, my teammates and our competitors,” said the Adams Mission resident.
The 16-year-old also dabbles in hockey and athletics, and enjoys listening to music and playing PlayStation.
