Rugby season still on hold

Amanzimtoti Rugby Club also turns 75 years this year and in honour, the club has launched a 75 challenge.

Club rugby has been postponed until mid-year, much to the dismay of players from Amanzimtoti Rugby Club.
However, the coaching staff ensures that all the players have training programmes to lift their spirits.

“It is difficult for the players. They are training and trying to stay positive.  Working hard and staying in condition with all the uncertainty and no date as to when club rugby will return makes it very difficult to focus,” said chairperson of the club, Casper Els.  In March 2020 when lockdown was announced, we played two warm-up games that were used as team selections. Then, during lockdown, club rugby was cancelled completely and we realised that we will have to do things differently.  The coaching staff gave the players training programmes to try and keep them engaged, conditioned and fit. The committee kept planning as if the season will start and that we might be able to play. But it never happened last year.”

Although lockdown regulations are now relaxed, the club is still not allowed to return to training.

“The KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union released a proposed plan to return to train, but until SA Rugby gets the go-ahead from the government, it remains just a plan.  There are currently no training sessions in place at the club, but there is a comprehensive return to train plan in place that will be implemented at the drop of a hat.”

Amanzimtoti Rugby Club also turns 75 years this year and in honour, the club has launched a 75 challenge.

“We are planning and have launched a full year of activities. Keep a lookout for upcoming challenges and events on our social media and our website.”
