Sapphire Coast Chameleons take to the field

A cricketing side made up of players from several local primary schools trekked out to Glenwood High School to display their talents.

A TEAM made up of talented players from Athlone Park, Umbogintwini, Amanzimtoti and Umkomaas Primary schools entered the annual Glenwood High School Andile Phehlukwayo U13 Cricket Festival as the Sapphire Coast Chameleons.

The tournament has now opened the door for players from all the schools in the surrounding area to opportunities to test their mettle against their peers.

One of the team’s coaches, James Orton, said that despite only training together for four hours, braving tough conditions of both rain and blistering heat, the Chameleons managed to come together exceptionally well and put together amazing performances out on the field.

“The Chameleons held their own against some tough competition from Pelham Primary where they narrowly lost but managed to bounce back and play some convincing cricket to win their next two games, one of which they set a score of 237 with two players making over 60 runs not out. Unfortunately the last game of the tournament got rained out before the game could be concluded, but the team was on the rise having taken a wicket before the rain disturbed the play,” said Orton.

He added that his fellow coaches and managers of the team were very proud of the team’s performance and looked forward to next year where they hope to create another team to go and challenge at this prestigious tournament.

The team expressed gratitude to Optimum Sports for their generous donation towards the kit and its exceptional design.
