Adams College’s girls ready for rugby festival

Adams College girls’ rugby team is set to make history as they compete in the inaugural U16 girls’ division at the 2025 Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.

THE Adams College girls’ rugby team will be among the record 28 teams that will participate in the 16th edition of the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival (KERF) at Kearsney College in Bothas Hill over the Easter weekend.

The Umbumbulu-based high school will join teams from KZN, Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, North West and Zimbabwe in a thrilling competition from April 17-21. The line-up of competitive teams includes 12 boys’ high school sides, 12 primary school teams and, for the first time, a girls’ U16 division.

Four U16 girls’ teams will play during lunchtime slots. The other three girls’ teams joining Adams College are Mowat Park High School from Montclair, George Campbell School of Technology from Durban and Richards Bay High School.

The boys’ sides representing KZN are Durban High School, Westville Boys’ High, Glenwood High School and host Kearsney College. Zimbabwe will be represented by Peterhouse Boys’ School, which will showcase its unique brand of rugby.

Announcing this year’s participating teams, Kearsney principal Patrick Lees said he was delighted that a girls’ component had been added to this year’s festival. It highlighted the invaluable role in the development of SA’s school rugby culture and growth since the inaugural KERF in 2008.

Head coach of The Sharks, John Plumtree, said players chosen to represent their schools at the festival should realise that talent alone was not enough for them to succeed in rugby.

“It takes an enormous amount of discipline, hard work and effort once these boys leave school if they want to take their rugby further,” said Plumtree.

There will be ample parking, numerous food outlets, a refreshment tent, and a fun play zone for children. For those unable to attend, games will be live-streamed on the SuperSport Schools app.
