Supportive cheers for either side, frantic mid-game calling and coaches hollering instructions were par for the course throughout the day.

Teams from every age group from Grade Eight through to Grade 12 took each other on as the crowds, made up of parents, learners and teachers, cheered the players on, relishing in the sporting spirit on display.

The boys’ hockey first team coach, Christopher Clarke, praised the show of prowess, placing a special emphasis on the players’ use of passing and teamwork, which led to their success.

Head of netball at Kingsway High School, Ruan Engelbrecht, said, “Our U14s kicked the morning off with a hard-fought 10-7 win. While the remaining teams did not come away with any victories, they played with heart and the first team’s match was a true spectacle. It kept us on the edges of our seats. It was goal for goal up until the very last minute and cheers echoed from both home and visiting supporters. Ultimately, Suid-Natal edged ahead with a 27-26 win.”

On the other end of the field was the intense rugby face-off. First team rugby coach Ferdi Oosthuizen said that although the Kingsway side enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half of play, the team ultimately could not close. He said, “We left a lot of tries on the field. Something we can definitely work on is attack shape, playing wider, as we played very narrow. It was a good win from Suid-Natal and it has given us a lot to think about to improve.”
