Amanzimtoti rugby squads clash in South Coast derby

Amanzimtoti Rugby Club head coach Owen Masinga shares insights about the first and second teams taking on a new system.

SUPPORT for the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s first and second teams are a spectacle to behold each weekend. On May 10, both teams took on South Coast Warriors’ first and second teams, making for a fantastic day of sport.

“While our first team fought hard and narrowly lost 12-15, our second team absolutely dominated with a commanding 43-7 victory. Things seem to be going well for the second team guys, they have been putting in the work and they realised that they are close to winning the league. Well done to the second team. It’s the small things like the new system that we have implemented which seem to be a huge problem for the opposition. We just need to duplicate the same systems and be consistent in our first team. When one team does well, the club still celebrates,” said club scribe and head coach Owen Masinga.

Owen explained that a lot of the players have never played in a system akin to soccer formations like 4-4-2 or 5-3-1 for example. In rugby, we use a 1-3-3-1 and these guys have never played in it. The second team is playing within the system for the second year and they are catching on well. The first team is in their first year adapting to it.

“With a system, we are trying to break what we call instinctive behaviour. When under pressure, instincts kick in and often it means abandoning the system. If we can marry the instinctive with the conscious, we can win the league. Once we can nail this, we’re going to be a dangerous side,” said Masinga.
