Growth in and out of the netball courts for Toti athlete

A local netballer was selected to play for the eThekwini District team and is also trialing for a spot in the Telkom Netball League.

TANNA de Freitas is currently trialling for a coveted spot in the Telkom Netball League’s Kingdom Queens team. The Amanzimtoti Netball Club star is one of three athletes from the club to be selected to represent the eThekwini District team.

Tanna’s netball journey began in Grade 1 and continued throughout high school. Her competitive streak started in senior primary when she took the sport more seriously.  She was selected for the U13 KZN indoor and outdoor netball teams in 2017. For Tanna, that experience is where her netball career really took off.

“I still love the sport and enjoy the competitive side of the game. I love the thrill of netball, especially when matches are close and intense in the final minutes. I enjoy being active, but what really keeps me motivated is the team environment and the friendships formed along the way. Playing against skilled opponents challenges me to raise my level and brings out my best performances,” said Tanna.

She is currently playing for Just Skills in the eThekwini League and Super League, and has played for the KZN Indoor and Outdoor Netball teams since 2017. In 2023, she captained the SA U19 Ladies Indoor Netball team on tour to Australia, which was a major highlight of her career.

“Being selected to represent my country was an incredible achievement and something I was extremely proud of. The competition was tough, but it pushed me to work harder, become more competitive, and grow both on and off the court. This year, my goal is to make a Telkom Netball League team, either Kingdom Stars or Kingdom Queens. I also aim to perform consistently, earn more player of the match awards, and continue proving that I belong at that level,” said the netballer.

Before any match, Tanna always starts with a proper warm-up to get her body ready. If nerves set in, she does a few jumps and shakes to release the tension and focus her mind.

“I also have a bit of a superstition. I always eat a banana before a game because I feel like I perform better. It started during my first year playing for the KZN Indoor team and has stuck with me ever since,” said Tanna.

Outside of netball, she enjoys baking and cooking, as well as spending time with friends and family. She loves being outdoors and staying active, but also appreciates a relaxed movie night at home.

“My advice for up-and-coming athletes would be to never give up and keep pushing, even when things feel challenging. Consistent training, good teamwork, and giving your best effort every time you step onto the court is essential for growth and improvement,” concluded Tanna.
