Toti cyclists take on new trail at Crocworld

The day catered for a full range of categories, from junior riders to seasoned competitors chasing valuable provincial series points.

A CYCLING milestone was reached on the South Coast when the third race in the KZN Provincial XCO Series debuted at Crocworld Conservation Centre in Scottburgh on March 29, with riders from the Amanzimtoti Cycle Club also part of the action. This was the first time the provincial cross-country Olympic event has been hosted on the brand-new, purpose-built course.

Riders were treated to cool, comfortable racing conditions, with a drizzle drifting in and out during the morning. The slight rain kept the dust down and added a technical edge to the course without making it unsafe, creating near-perfect racing conditions for both elite and development riders.

Amanzimtoti Cycle Club’s chairperson, Barry Walker, said the newly designed circuit showcased the best of what coastal KZN riding has to offer.

“The fast-flowing single track sections wound through natural bush, while short, punchy climbs tested fitness and race strategy. Technical features, including rock gardens and tight switchbacks, demanded focus and bike handling skills,” said Walker.

The day catered for a full range of categories, from junior riders building experience to seasoned competitors chasing valuable provincial series points. Walker said such vents form an important part of the development pipeline in the sport, allowing younger riders to compete in a professionally structured environment.

“A special mention goes to Nathi Gama from Amanzimtoti Cycling Club, who completed his very first XCO race. Taking on a challenging new course for your debut is no small task, and finishing strong is an achievement to be proud of. His effort reflects the growing enthusiasm for cross-country mountain biking along the South Coast,” he said.

He also congratulated all the riders who took part and embraced the new venue, adding that there is little doubt that this event will grow from strength to strength in the coming years, becoming a firm favourite on the KZN racing calendar.
