As such, KZN police declared the entire route for the Ultimate Human Race a no-fly zone, warning that unauthorised drones will be taken down.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda explained that comprehensive safety and security plans have been implemented to ensure an incident-free race.
“The entire Comrades Marathon route has been declared a no-fly zone and only authorised operational aircraft and drones will be permitted to fly. Any unauthorised drone will be taken down operationally in accordance with the law,” said Netshiunda.
Security measures by police were enhanced due to incidents reported during last year’s edition of the marathon. Netshiunda said that there were numerous motor vehicle and item thefts, and since then, police identified hotspot areas, deploying officers accordingly.
Netshiunda further warned that police would act against the displaying of banners depicting unsavoury or politically aligned messages that go against municipal by-laws and other statutes.
Spectators are urged to remain vigilant and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Various different law enforcement units, supported by private security companies and Comrades Marathon marshals, will be deployed along the route to maintain safety and order.
