Speed freaks revved to improve in go-kart race
NEW Forest High School's go-karting team took part in the third annual Gordon Murray downhill kart race at Glenwood High School on Sunday, 28 July.

Grade 11 pupils, Thobani Mhlongo, Govindren Pillay and Pevolin Chetty took up the challenge to enter this year’s, race hoping to improve on last year’s performance. The trio, who call themselves ‘Speed Freex’, used the same body from last year’s entry. Adjustments to the car included the use of a handbrake as opposed to a BMX braking system, which cut their race short last year. The car was also lighter and more aerodynamic.
In an action-packed fourth round heat, the only team from South Durban, was knocked out by George Campbell who went on to be overall winners. Citing loss of speed as the reason for being pipped to the finish line, the team aspires to achieve a podium finish in next year’s race.
Under the guidance of engineering, graphics and drawing teacher, Vivek Sookdavu, the team took two months assemble ‘Lucy’, and they are already making preparations for next year’s race.
“I would like to encourage other schools and the public to enter the race. It is open to everyone. We thank the school for affording us the opportunity to participate in the race, as well parents and everyone else who helped us with the resources we needed to put the car together,” said Vivek.
With the wind in their hair and aspirations to feature in the Top Gear Festival, these speed freaks are not looking to hit the brakes any time soon.
