School marks 88 years of existence

MONTCLAIR Senior Primary School celebrated its 88th birthday on Wednesday, 7 August.

Founded on 4 August, 1925 with just 86 pupils, four classrooms and five staff members, the school has undergone many changes over the years. First known as Clairmont Government School, the school’s name has changed to Montclair Government School and finally its current name, Montclair Senior Primary School. In 1971, the school experienced an influx of pupils which resulted in the establishment of the junior campus.

Founding principal, JB Broker’s staff compliment included EA Bangay, D Toogood, CE Waring and DE Fischer. In the dual medium school, they each taught combined grades in a single classroom. Built on what was formerly a dairy farm, the school now boasts 535 pupils, 28 staff members and 20 classrooms.

“Many changes have taken place over the years. The school’s make-up, from the teachers to the pupils has changed. The school faces different challenges compared to those experienced in the early days,” said Cheryl James (64), who has been a teacher at the school for 43 years.

Principal, Mabutho Cele said: “I am honoured and excited to be part of the school as it celebrates 88 years. With its rich history, we only have Miss James as our historical archive, which is a concern as she is retiring at the end of the year.”

The school is looking to compile a booklet of its history as to not let it pass away. The school also plans to have bigger celebrations when it turns 90 and 100 years. The principal thanks everyone in the school community for making the day’s celebration a success.
