Pupils get to grips with dug-out port plans

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted a feedback seminar on Monday, 12 August at the Austerville Civic Centre for all matric pupils from local schools involved in researching proposed South Durban spatial developments.

The research assignments, which form part of the geography syllabus, allowed pupils to investigate the proposed spatial developments, including the dug-out port, link road and back of port operations.

Vanessa Black from Earthlife Africa, Arnia Van Vuuren from Bird Life Africa, Brenda Pratt from the SDCEA and Shirley Moodley from the Department of Education acted as the panel for the presentations and also provided the pupils with an understanding of the stylistic and logistical protocol of the plans.

Each school was awarded a certificate of participation and the top three pupils were given plaques in acknowledgement of their effort. “It was an extremely enlightening experience to witness the vast amounts of knowledge the youth have when it comes to social problems and challenges that many people face,” said SDCEA’s Noluthando Mbeje.
