School amasses over R10,000 for rhino cause

BRIGHTON Beach Senior Primary School has raised over R10,000 in its ‘Give a rhino, save a rhino’ initiative.

The school started a project to raise money for orphaned baby rhinos in the spirit of protecting their heritage for future generations and to raise awareness of the plight of rhinos among pupils and parents. Teachers at the school felt passionate about starting the campaign when they watched an emotional video of an orphaned baby rhino named Thembi and the pupils enthusiastically took up the cause.

The pupils joined the Rhino Club and traded R10 for a Brighton Beach Senior Primary School ‘R10 note’, with included the image of a rhino. This was then pinned on the image of a 1.5m rhino. By the end of four weeks, no trace of the image could be seen under the pinned notes.

Raffle sheets were also sent home with the pupils and will be collected at the start of the school’s fourth term. Along with other fundraising projects, the school has managed to raise over R10,000 and is still going strong.
