Retiring school teacher’s commitment lauded
Montclair Senior Primary School bade a farewell to teacher at the end of the term, Cheryl James (65) of Woodlands as she retired after 41 years of teaching at the school.
“I have seen a lot of changes take place in the school over the years, including the building of the tennis courts and the pool. Before we had a pool, we used to walk to the Alex Bulley swimming pool on the corner of Wingate and Kenyon Howden roads,” said Cheryl.
“I’m going to miss the interaction with the children, the camaraderie and the support of the principal, staff and the student governing body. I will not miss the routine, the marking, lesson preparations and the constantly changing system.”Cheryl has been involved in the school’s fundraising committee which raised money to build the tennis courts, pool, new offices, the pavilion and other necessities. She has also been lauded by the school for never missing a day of school, neither has she filed a leave form whether annual or sick.
“I have had a number of colds over the years, but I managed to get through them.” As a chess teacher, she has taught many pupils who have received provincial and national awards.”I am planning on joining clubs such as the women’s auxiliary, be more involved in church and charity work as well as travelling. I am going to enjoy life.””The highlight of my teaching years is seeing positive change take place in the school as well as the additions to the infrastructure and resources.” Her teaching philosophy emphasises the need for teaching to also take place outside of the classroom. “I believe the environment is important. I try to zone in on whatever is pertinent and I try to teach life long skills.”
During a special assembly for Miss James, the school sang happy birthday as she celebrated her 65th birthday on Wednesday, 27 November.and pupils handed her roses and cards with special messages. In an address to the school and Miss James, the principal, Mabutho Cele said the day was one of celebrating a life well lived by Miss James, and not of parting ways.
“The school will still require your services for many years. Today we say thank you for a life well lived,” said Cele.He added she was more than a teacher, but also a mother, mentor, coach and fundraiser. “You have shown the highest level of commitment and a love for the profession. You are a model of a community builder, teacher and leader.”
In an emotional speech, Miss James encouraged the students to focus on what they want in life and to chase after it.”
