Westons celebrate 64 years of marriage
Montclair couple stuck together through the good and bad.
Roy (88) and Mavis (84) Weston make marriage seem like a walk in the park, as they celebrated 64 years of matrimony on Tuesday, 11 March.
The Weston’s were joined together at the Central Methodist Church in Durban in 1950, after five years of dating. The couple met through a friend of Roy’s, whom he was visiting after they returned from World War 2. His friend coincidently lived across the road from Mavis’s home and for their first date, the love-birds went dancing at the Road House Hotel.
Talking about what first attracted them to each other, Roy said he was drawn to Mavis’s personality. “I think he became a habit to me,” said Mavis. “A bad habit,” he jokes. Roy jokingly advised that to be a good husband, you have to pay and not stop paying. They advise that marriage is not all roses, there will be good and bad times. “We just carry-on getting on each other’s nerves. It’s just cheaper to fight through it,”said Mavis on how they managed to stay together.
Having lived in the area for 57 years, 25 in Woodlands, 25 in Yellowwood Park and seven in Montclair, the Weston’s have seen a lot of changes take place in the area. “We have seen tremendous changes take place in the area, good and bad. When we first moved here, the only shops were at the corner of Kenyon Howden and Buller roads,” said Mavis.
Roy and Mavis were founding members of the Woodlands Sports Club. They spend their time relaxing, gardening and spending time with their beloved children and grandchildren. The couple boast three children, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
