6,000 pupils benefit from anti-bullying campaign

Captain Le Roux concludes her anti-bully campaign.

BRIGHTON Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux’s anti-bullying roadshow, which began on 25 January, came to a successful end on Thursday, 13 March, with more than 6,000 pupils participating.

“The purpose of this campaign was to focus on the prevention and reporting of school bullying, to prevent or minimise violence. Generally the focus on school bullying falls on physical bullying. People pay less attention to emotional or verbal bullying, which can turn into physical bullying and violent actions,” said Cpt Le Roux.

The campaign, which included brochures sponsored by ADT Security, consisted of a four phase programme. Phase one saw brochures distributed to teachers and parents. In phase two, the focus was on ‘I am somebody’, which was aimed at grade R to 7 pupils. High school pupils were the targeted in phase three, with an emphasis on bullying actions that constitute a criminal offence. The final phase was a two-day social media campaign.

The programme included 28 presentations hosted by Cpt Le Roux at numerous schools throughout the Brighton Beach policing area. “I would like to encourage parents to take any form of school bullying seriously. Do not consider your child’s cry for help as nonsense. Bullying causes high levels of stress and anxiety and affects emotional well-being,” Cpt Le Roux.
