School unites in song for 50th

Glenardle Junior Primary School turns 50.

GLENARDLE Junior Primary School on the Bluff celebrated 50 years of education on Thursday, 20 March, with a day of memorable activities.

The school first opened its doors in 1964, with three teachers and 85 pupils commanded by principal, Mrs Cheesemond.

The mantle of leadership passed onto Mrs Clark in 1978 and Mrs Whitehorn in 1986, who remains school principal. Under Mrs Cheesemond’s leadership, the school was the first junior primary in Durban with audio-visual teaching aids and a school stage.

50 years on, the school has 12 permanent teachers and 263 pupils, who on 20 March took to the school field to celebrate the school’s half-centenary. Activities commenced with the annual ‘big walk’, followed by a special assembly. Thereafter, the children excitedly took to the school field to release 50 balloons as they sang the school song and ate the ceremonial cake, before receiving a gift to mark the occasion.
