ETHEKWINI Municipality has temporarily closed the Mobeni Heights Crematorium owing to repair work being carried out on one furnace and another being replaced on site.
The repair work is being done to ensure the proper functioning of the existing operating furnace while also ensuring compliance with environmental legislation.
The municipality is also in the process of replacing one of the furnaces with a filtration unit to ensure efficient cremations, which are within the regulated emission requirements.
It is anticipated that the new furnace will be fully operational within the next three weeks, while the other one is being repaired.
It is envisaged that the Mobeni Heights Crematorium will be re-opened before the end of June.
Residents wishing to make use of cremation facilities are urged to utilise the Tongaat Crematorium or alternatively the Stellawood and Clare Estate Crematoria, which are privately owned facilities.
“The municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused and assures residents that the repair work is necessary to ensure efficient and quality delivery of crematoria services to our communities,” said eThekwini Municipality’s communications head, Tozi Mthethwa.
