Durban prepares for tourist onslaught at beaches
Safety and cleanliness a priority.
IT is all-systems-go for eThekwini Municipality ahead of the festive season as security plans are revealed.
The municipality and its partners have developed a comprehensive integrated summer season programme to safeguard locals and tourists.
About 1,4-million visitors are expected over the festive season.
Beachfront security includes the distribution of 90,000 wristbands to all children who visit, containing details of their guardians. Should a child be lost 40 child-minders will be on hand to care for them.
About 72 ‘beach buddies’ have been tasked with providing assistance to visitors and an extra 113 lifeguards have been deployed across the city. Bathing beaches will be operational daily from 6am to 6pm.
Durban Solid Waste (DSW) has employed 95 additional litter pickers to keep the beaches clean and an extra 1,362 bins have been sited along various beaches.
Selected roads leading onto beaches will be closed during the festive season, while others will have boomgates. On peak days only permit holders will be allowed access.
SAPS, Metro Police and security, and beach law enforcement officers will be on patrol throughout the city and road safety campaigns will remove unroadworthy cars and drunk or irresponsible drivers from the road.
