One dead, five in hospital after roll-over M4 crash
A critically injured man had to be placed on a manual ventilator before being taken to hospital
A woman died, a man was placed on a ventilator in a critical condition and four others were seriously hurt when two cars collided on the M4 southbound before the Bluff off-ramp on Sunday morning (29 January).
At about 4.30am, Rescue Care paramedics responded to the collision to find that two vehicles had collided, before one overturned and came to rest on its roof. The occupants were ejected from the vehicle and were found lying on the busy freeway.
The woman was declared dead at the scene as she had succumbed to her injuries by the time paramedics arrived. A man who sustained critical injuries was placed on a manual ventilator before being transported by EMRS paramedics to a nearby hospital.
Four other people sustained serious injury and were stabilised before being transported to various Durban hospitals.
The M4 South was closed by SAPS while emergency personnel cleared the scene.
