Romondo Thompson has banished the Comrades Marathon from his bucket list, after he finished his first Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, 10 June in just nine hours and 16 minutes.
Romondo began his Comrades Marathon journey just under a year ago when his six-year-old son started playing soccer. “I figured I need to stay fit to keep up with him and I took up running. That bug bit me hard so I joined Bluff AC. From a very young age I was always passionate about sport especially running. My grandpa and I would always watch the Comrades Marathon and I always said one day I would participate in the race, so it has always been a goal,” said Thompson.

Romondo hopes his achievement will inspire others to also reach for their dreams and conquer their goals, especially in his community. “I’m originally from Hime Street where there are many people with great potential and ability. Hopefully what they can see from this is that if you work a little, you can achieve your goals and no dreams are in achievable. There’s a lot more out there for us,” he said.
He owes his improved health and confidence to his decision to take up running. “It makes you feel good, you feel young,” he said, explaining what he gets out of running. “You want to be able to engage and run around with your children. It takes a lot of hard work to persevere but I think, most importantly, it’s the hard work you put in after the hard work you’ve already done that gets you to where you want to be,” added Thompson.
