New steering committee elected to lead SDCEA
10 new steering committee members were nominated at the biennial general meeting (BGM)

SOUTH Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted its 2016 to 2018 biennial general meeting (BGM) on Saturday, 4 August at Austerville Civic Centre.
Some 50 community members attended the meeting, including 17 SDCEA representatives from different affiliates and community organisations. SDCEA has grown as an organisation and continues to grow as 10 new steering committee members including Shannon Leigh Landers, Desere De Vaal, Siphelele Cele, Teddy Govender, Ben Madokwe, Perumal Moonsamy, Victor Kupsamy, Tony Kistan and Bala Govender were nominated at the BGM, along with 15 previous members who returned to the committee.
The increase of new organisations to join the SDCEA brings the committee to a total of 25 members.
SDCEA is proud to note that many organisations have recognised its work within the community and are therefore keen to join SDCEA in their various campaigns and projects they work on to challenge big corporate companies and government.
The BGM programme included guest speaker and director of groundwork Bobby Peek, who spoke about the importance of activism and congratulated SDCEA on continuing to fight against polluting industries and corporates. Thereafter the chairman and co-ordinator responsible for the day-to-day running of the SDCEA gave his report on the history of the organisation, mentioned all the work the staff partake in and how the organisation has grown in the last 23 years. SDCEA bookkeeper Dieu-Donne Clemitson presented the financial report for the period July 2016 to June 2018. The day concluded with a vote of thanks and acknowledgements to all the organisations and allies of SDCEA. SDCEA looks forward to many more years of working in solidarity with South Durban communities and other organisations.
