YWP WI supports Sailors Society
YWP looks forward to seeing all members and past members at the 50th birthday party on Saturday, 25 August.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute (YWPWI) president Sharon Quail welcomed all members and visitors, with a warm welcome to speaker Rev Boet van Schalkwyk from the Sailors Society.
The minutes of the previous meeting were taken as read and treasurer Wendy Henderson confirmed that the finances were all in order.Once again, special thanks was given to Alida Pegram and Sharon Quail for the amazing work they do with the bits and match every month. Members broke for tea early as all were looking forward to the talk by the speaker of the evening.
The Sailors Society is a worldwide organisation which assists seamen and women all over the world and which has helped since 1877. It is largely an inter-faith organisation which provides assistance to seamen from everywhere in the world. The society assists with health issues and family arrangements so that the seamen can get in touch with the families wherever they are by phone or via the internet. It is run by volunteers who give their time just to be there for a sailor who needs assistance when away from home.
Every festive season, Father Christmas gives a gift package to every sailor who is in Durban port on that special day and the gifts come from contributions by the public. Fortunately YWPWI was able to hand over literally dozens of beanies, mittens and scarves to the speaker, as the seamen always need to keep warm in cold climates. All contributions to the society such as monetary, toiletries, mugs, sweets, mittens, bags are gratefully accepted. Society should never forget how important ships and sailors are.
There were no birthdays for the month but the WI still needs a few raffles for its big 50th birthday bash on Saturday, 25 August. Social hostess Vanessa Wilesmith then told all members how the recyclables collected every month are used to assist others. Marietjie Jansen van Rensburg gave a short talk on the work of the ATKV, which is the Afrikaanse Taal an Kultuur Vereeniging. There are lots of activities every month and everyone is invited to join in.
The competition results were read by vice president Robyn Murray and the evening closed with the WI prayer and wishes for everyone to go well, take care and above all stay safe.
